Sal Digiglio seeks term on Nesquehoning Council

Sal Digiglio of the New Columbus section of Nesquehoning has announced he is seeking a four-year term on the Nesquehoning Borough Council. A Democrat, he is seeking his party's nomination in the May 17 Primary Election.

He is married for 51 years to the former Ursula Bocchiccio from Nesquehoning.Digiglio is a graduate of the former Nesquehoning High School and as a young man enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in September, 1953. He was honorably discharged in October, 1957.During his enlistment, he was assigned to the Tenth Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C., where he attained the rank of corporal. He served overseas in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, then being assigned to Port of Prince, Haiti, during the Haitian Military Coup. His enlistment time occurred during the Cold War, spending a majority of his duty in the Caribbean.After his discharge from the military, he worked as a part-time Nesquehoning police officer during the late 1950s to the mid 1960s. He was also employed by the Gurian Corporation, Fauzio Brothers and the Bethlehem Mines Corporation.Digiglio served on the Nesquehoning Water Authority from 1989-2000, during a period when the water system was updated. He helped coordinate the efforts with the fire departments, assuring new fire hydrants were placed where needed for the proper water flow to adequately fight a fire.He also stepped in and served as Nesquehoning mayor for a two-year period, after the untimely death of the late Mayor Joseph Staivecki. Digiglio later served a term on the borough council, during which time he was chairman of the Buildings and Police Public Safety committees, co-chairman of the Streets Committee, and a member of the Fire and Ambulance Committee.His community involvement includes an active member of the Carbon-Schuylkill U.S. Marine Corps League, active member of the Nesquehoning Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8008, and life member of New Columbus Fire Company, where he was a member of the House Committee, company president and assistant chief.He is the father of four children, Lisa, wife of Ted Knox of Egg Harbor, N.J., Joanne, wife of Hal Hodge of Virginia Beach, Va., and Sal Jr. and Ursula, both of Nesquehoning. He also has four grandchildren.
