Tamaqua students inducted to Junior Honor Society

Forty seven Tamaqua Area Middle School students were inducted into the school's chapter of the National Junior Honor Society in March. Jacob Gursky and vanessa Solt, NJHS officers for this school year, conducted the traditional candle lighting ceremony. Maura Streisel, chapter advisor, presented the inductees with a certificate, while Christopher Czapla, school principal, offered congratulatory remarks.

"We are very proud to recognize these outstanding members of our student body," offered Mrs. Streisel. "National Junior Honor Society members are chosen for and then expected to continue their exemplary contributions to the school and community." Members were selected by the chapter's faculty council for meeting high standards of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship.This was the middle school's fifth induction of members into the National Junior Honor Society, an organization with more than 6,000 chapters nationwide. Throughout the year, chapter members will participate in group and individual service projects for the school and the community. Candidacy is determined at the end of the school's second marking period. Students with a cumulative average of 90 or above, as well as a satisfactory school discipline record are eligible. Once notified of their eligibility, students must document at least five service hours and obtain a letter of recommendation.The National Junior Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for students. Since 1929, millions of students have been selected for membership. NJHS is sponsored nationally by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

New members of the Tamaqua Area Middle School NJHS include: Abby Machay, Jacob Marcola, Patrick McMullen, Jazmin Mena, Kayla Miller, Matthew Minchoff, Cullen Murphy, Emma Osenbach, Kyle Patrick, Allison Pedersen, Bailey Pedersen, Nicole Prantow, Juliette Reinhart, Arienne Serniak, Samantha Shamonsky, Julia Shellhammer, Andrew Tite, Morgan Veglia, Danielle Williams, Kesley Zamudio and Austin Zwolenik.
