Law Day to be noted in Carbon on April 29

The Carbon County Bar Association announced that "Law Day" will be commemorated this year on April 29 with a special program at the county courthouse in Jim Thorpe.

Law Day is held across the country by bar associatons and is aimed at fostering community awareness and understanding of the American legal system.Law Day is usually held on May 1, but since that date is a Sunday this year the program will be held on Friday, April 29.The Young Lawyers Division of the county association, in cooperation with Marian Catholic and Palmerton high schools, will be presenting the program in courtroom one on the second floor of the courthouse.Groups of students from the Carbon County Vocational Technical Institutie, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Panther Valley, Weatherly, Palmerton and Marian high schools have been invited to attend the activities.The activities will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude by noon.The program includes the following:The county court's "Jury Orientation Program" will be presented first followed by one of the county's judges and members of the bar association addressing those in attendance with some brief remarks concerning the purpose and significance of Law Day.These remarks will be followed by the presentation of a mock civil trial put on by Marian and Palmerton mock trial teams. Also, students from each of the high schools will be selected to sit on the jury so that the students will be able to participate directly in the trial and have an opportunity to experience deliberation and returning a verdict.Members of the public are also invited to attend the program.
