Weissport Council adopts Taxpayer Bill of Rights resolution

Weissport Council on Monday night adopted the Taxpayer Bill of Rights resolution.

While it is an obligation of all taxpayers in a local municipality to file all local tax returns and pay all local taxes to which they are subject, the resolution provides rights to local taxpayers so that equity and fairness govern the administration and collection of local taxes.Council members also discussed adopting a property maintenance code. Attorney Michael Greek said that the code will deal with all aspects of property maintenance, such as fire damage, electricity issues, requiring people to take reasonable care of their property, sidewalks, cutting grass and garbage.Greek said that he is recommending that the borough give people five days to comply before giving them a summary citation. He said that council members should review the sample and be ready to adopt the policy manual by the next meeting.Council secretary Dana Brubaker announced that the borough did receive the $10,000 grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Brubaker said that the grant was initiated by former state Rep. Keith McCall.Brubaker said that the funds will be applied to the loan for the new dump truck.
