Maine trucker killed in Schuylkill crash

A Maine truck driver was killed in a crash involving another truck along a Schuylkill County road on Tuesday. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the crash occurred about 9:20 a.m. along SR125, south of Walnut Hollow Road, in Eldred Township.

Troopers said Norman L. Tuttle, 45, of Presque Isle, Maine, was operating a 2006 Peterbilt truck tractor northbound and decending a hill at a speed too fast for conditions while carrying a full loaded trailer of potatoes. As he approached a hard right hand curve he failed to negotiate it and the right side tires of the truck lifted off the road. The rear portion of the trailer struck the drivers side cargo area of a 1999 International 4700 tractor trailer operated by Carl E. Adams, 52, of Klingerstown, Schuylkill County. Adams was hauling 215 bales of hay. After the initial impact Adams' truck was knocked over coming to rest on its passenger side. After impact Tuttle's truck slid about 140 feet crossing the southbound lane and onto the berm. It then went down a slight embankment spilling a portion of the load.Tuttle was thrown from his vehicle and entrapped underneath the trailer portion. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Wallace Hodgson. Adams sustained minor injuries, troopers said, and was taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville, for treatment. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
