Coaldale man charged with beating father

Coaldale police arrested a borough man for allegedly beating up his father.

Leonard M. Ruggiero Jr., 19, of 101 First St., was charged with simple assault and harassment after an incident Monday.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed with District Judge Stephen Bayer of Tamaqua by Officer Charles Blesse, here's what happened:At 2:49 a.m. April 10, Officer Gabriel Szozda received a telephone assignment to contact Leonard Ruggiero. He called Ruggiero, who told the officer he had been in a physical altercation with his son, Leonard Ruggiero Jr.Szozda arrived at 336 Ridge Terrace at 2:51 a.m. and saw blood on the elder Ruggiero's face, hair and clothing. Szozda observed an inch-long cut on the man's forehead, a bruise on the left side of his head, cuts on a finger on his left hand and right elbow and a swollen right cheek.During an investigation, Szozda learned that Ruggiero had come home after 10 p.m. and had gotten into an argument with his son. At one point, Ruggiero Jr. hit his father on the head. Then they went outside the house and fought in the parking lot.During the fight, Ruggiero Jr. allegedly slammed his father down and grabbed him by his hair and smashed his face on the ground four times. He then fled, leaving the elder Ruggiero in the parking lot, bleeding.Szozda called the ambulance and had Ruggiero checked for injuries, but he refused treatment.
