Garbage fire started by young smoker Multiple fire and safety code violations cited in Tamaqua

Firefighters in Tamaqua were called to an apartment fire at the rear of 12 West Broad Street, Cottage Avenue, in Tamaqua Friday.

When they arrived, a pile of garbage and wood was burning on the emergency escape ladder outside the apartment window. After investigating, the cause was determined to be started after a 13-year old girl threw a cigarette out an apartment window onto a pile of trash.Tamaqua Fire Chief Tom Hartz Sr and Tamaqua Code Enforcement Officer Jim Barron cited multiple safety and fire code violations.No serious damage or injuries were reported. Tamaqua Fire Police detoured traffic around the area during the response.
