Lansford man admits sexual assault on two young girls

A Lansford man pleaded guilty Thursday afternoon to sexually assaulting two young girls in separate incidents.

Jeffrey David Cope, 22, pleaded guilty before Judge Steven R. Serfass to one count each of rape, rape of a child, corruption of a minor and criminal conspiracy-harassment, and four counts of indecent assault.Cope admitted having sexual relations with a then eight-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl. He was also accused of having inappropriate contact with a seven or eight-year-old girl.Cope was arrested by Nesquehoning police for the incidents involving the eight-year-old that occurred over a two year period. When first confronted with the allegations Cope admitted to having sexual contact with the girl once, then later claimed that the girl instigated the contact. While investigating the matter police learned of the assault the 15-year-old, Assistant District Attorney Michael Greek told the court.Greek said the assaults on the older girl occurred during the time frame of July 2007 through May 2009.Police also charged that Cope threatened the older girl with bodily harm if she did not have sex with him and told her if he could not get at her to hurt her, he would have one of his friends do it.Serfass accepted the pleas and deferred sentencing and ordered a presentence investigation (PSI) be prepared by the adult probation office.Since the charges fall under the provisions of Megan's Law, Cope will have to be evaluated by the Sexual Offenders Assessment Board to determine if he is a violent sexual offender which would mean lifetime registration. If not determined to be a violent sexual offender, registration is for 10 years.
