Schuylkill crash

One person sustained a major injury and one driver is facing charges following a two-vehicle crash that occurred in Schuylkill County.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said the crash occurred about 2:28 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, along SR209 at the bottom of Keffers Mountain in Porter Township.Troopers said Melissa L. Karpulk, 34, of Tower City, and Mary B. Salada, 58, also of Tower City, were both northbound. Troopers said Karpulk attempted to pass Salada.As she attempted to pass, Karpulk realized another vehicle was approaching in the opposite lane of travel.She attempted to pull back into the right lane behind Salada but her 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee sideswiped Salada's 1996 Chrysler Cirrus.Upon impact the Chrysler spun counter-clockwise and entered the opposite lane of travel causing Salada to lose control. The vehicle went onto the berm and up a dirt embankment, then came to rest back on 209.A passenger with Salada, Howell R. Baddorf, 85, of Tower City, was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Salada sustained a moderate injury and Karpulk a minor injury.Troopers said Karpulk was cited for unsafe passing movement as well as having an expired inspection and expired registration.
