East Penn thankful for chairs donation

Approximately 60 new chairs were in the municipal meeting room of East Penn Township on April 4. They had been donated by Jehovah's Witnesses of Lehighton which was closing its building.

Secretary Deanna Cunfer said she is going to write a letter of thanks.Under public comment Joe Ehritz reminded supervisors that the stream along Hollow Road where the township is working is of exceptional value and there are native trout in many township streams. When doing drainage special care should be taken.Since there have been several bounced checks for social hall rent, it was suggested the township should expect payment by credit card. The fees will be added to the rental.Solicitor Jim Nanovic will take legal steps to get payment for the bad checks. Payment for the bounced checks will be acceptable in cash only since there have been times when the second check also bounced.Both Duane Schleicher's major subdivision and Churchview Downs land development plans were tabled by the planning commission.The Delaware and Lehigh Trail will be closed until surface construction is completed.The fire insurance escrow account ordinance will allow the township to retain a percentage of insurance money in case of a fire. It will be refunded to the homeowner as soon as the property is cleaned up.Lehigh Asphalt received all but one of the road materials bids. That one went to Eastern Industries on recommendation of roadmaster Cory Smith. Bids will be advertised for the 2011 road project.Supervisor Randy Pfeiffer thought at least half of the road budget should be kept so a road could be redone with a base. Many roads in the township are two inches of paving on top of mud, he said. Hanover Engineers had supplied a list of which roads needed attention the most.Supervisor Herb Truhe said that can't be done because without oil and chipping more roads will fall apart.Bids are being requested for a 2010 or 2011 Charger with a police package. The vote was four in favor, Randy Pfeiffer against. He was against the idea when it first came up last month.Truhe and Cunfer were authorized to sign the papers for the PennVest loan for the sewer installation.Officer Daniel Magarelli has completed his probationary period.Jeff Weiner, Dawn Rose Benner, Harvey Lenhart and Jeff Bradford were accepted as fire police.On Oct. 7-8 the Ragnar 200-mile day and night relay - 12 members to a team - will use township roads for a race. The D&L Heritage Marathon and half marathon will be run Oct. 23. It will be using the Riverview parking lot. The cost of police to control traffic will be the responsibility of the race organizers.The Lehigh River Stocking Association will use Riverview Park for its Lunker Best fishing derby on May 21. It has to get a daily use permit for the park and clean up after the event
