Newspaper drive

The men and boys of St. John's Lutheran Church will hold their monthly newspaper drive on Saturday, April 2. There will be one sweep of the Palmerton, Aquashicola, and Little Gap areas beginning at 8 a.m.Papers should be bundled and placed within sight of collectors. They are collecting papers only, no magazines. They also need brown grocery size paper bags. The shiny inserts are acceptable.Persons missed, or those wishing to dispose of papers throughout the month, may take them to the garage across from the church on Fireline Road, which is always open. In case of bad weather, the drive will be held the following Saturday.Free workshopAt 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, a free workshop will be held at the Palmerton Area Library. A Psanky Egg demonstration will be presented by Jodi Obena. She will demonstrate the egg painting, and there will be opportunities to sign up for future classes.Lenten servicesJerusalem UCC, Jerusalem Lutheran Church, St. Matthew's UCC, Salem UCC, and Salem-St. Paul Lutheran will gather together for midweek Lenten Services.On Wednesday, April 6, the service will be hosted by Salem UCC, Gilbert. A soup and sandwich supper will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by worship at 7:30 p.m. Pastor Brian Holben will be preaching.The host church provides the soup and dessert, and those attending shall bring along a sandwich.Concourse ClubAt 7 p.m., Thursday, April 7, the Palmerton Concourse Club will meet at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton. The program will be a "Fashion Show."The Concourse Club is a service organization which gives back to the community. Anyone interested in learning more about the club is asked to call Joan at (610) 826-2716 for information.Bookmark contestAs part of the National Library Month, the Palmerton Area Library is sponsoring a bookmark contest. Children from preschool through 6th grade are invited to draw or color a bookmark and submit it to the library. Entry forms are available at the library and will be distributed to all local schools.Knitting clubsFrom 6-8 p.m., Monday, April 4, the Knitting Club will meet at the Palmerton Area Library. The club is for all area residents interested in knitting, crocheting, and other crafts. New members are welcome.Teen Advisory groupThe Teen Advisory Group is for students in grades 7-12 and meets at the library after school on the first Wednesday of the month. The next meeting will be April 6. New members are welcome.Lions ClubThe Palmerton Lions Club will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, April 4, at the Palmerton Community Center, 217 Franklin Ave., Palmerton. Guest speakers will be Bob Neumoyer and Liz McElwee.For information about the Lions Club, call Nick Hawkey at (610) 826-6465.Miller-Keystone BloodmobileMiller-Keystone Blood Center will conduct its next bimonthly bloodmobile in Palmerton on Monday, April 11 at the First United Church of Christ, next to Palmerton Borough Hall. Registration hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 3-5:30 p.m. This visit is sponsored by Shea's Hardware.Previous donors should receive emails and/or phone calls asking them to make appointments. New donors are needed as well. Minimum requirements are: 17 years old, 110 pounds, general good health. First-time Miller donors should bring photo ID, such as a driver's license. Previous Miller donors, please bring your Miller card. Donors with appointments are given priority at registration, but walk-ins are always welcome.Miller-Keystone is the sole supplier of blood and blood products to all the hospitals in this area, including Palmerton and Gnaden Huetten.In addition to the reserved parking spaces in front of the church, donors have permission to park in the Penn Northeast lots (both sides of the building, toward the back) and the former Golden Key lot.Palmerton Area Historical SocietyThe Monday, April 11 meeting of the Palmerton Area Historical Society will have as its speaker (airplane travel from Florida permitting) George Petrole, COO of Northeast Development, the company converting the former New Jersey Zinc West Plant site into a high-tech office park. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the second-floor gallery of the Palmerton Library with a short business session, followed by Mr. Petrole's talk. The public is welcome to attend.
