Two arrested in child abuse case

Two persons were arrested in what police called a child abuse case. Charged was a Monroe County man for striking the child, and the victim's mother for lying to police.

Pocono Mountain Regional police said on Monday, March 21, they received a report of a suspected child abuse incident. Police said on March 9 the family of the victim child, an 11-month-old female, contacted authorities after seeing a suspicious bruise on the child's left cheek that appeared to be a handprint.The child was taken to be examined by a physician who reported the injury was suspicious in nature in that there were three distinct linear marks. Police determined the child had been struck in the face.The investigation led to the arrest of Leroy Burns, 23, who resides at 6521 Runnymead Lane, Tobyhanna, Coolbaugh Township, on Wednesday, March 23, at 1:06 p.m. He was arraigned before District Judge Anthony Fluegel, of Tobyhanna, on charges of simple assault and endangering the welfare of the children. He was committed to the county prison in lieu of $1,500 straight cash bail. A preliminary hearing is tentatively set for April 1 at 2:45 p.m.Police said during the course of the investigation the mother of the child, Nicole Young, 21, of the above address, was interviewed by the personnel of the Office of Children & Youth and provided information to them. Police also interviewed Young and she provided information to them.Police said their probe showed that Young provided false information concerning the incident. On Thursday, March 24, police arrested Young on charges of obstruction administration of law and other governmental function, hindering apprehension or prosecution and false reports to law enforcement authorities.She was arraigned before Fluegel with bail set at $1,500. A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for April 8 at 2:30 p.m. Police did not indicate if Young posted bail.
