Members of the Lehighton American Legion Post 314 celebrated the 92nd birthday of the American Legion by honoring others with awards.

Honored were Frank Lorah, a police officer with the Franklin Township Police Department as the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and four fourth grade students were recognized for submitting winning Americanism essays.Presenting the plaque to Lorah was Harry Wynn III, finance officer."Lehighton Legion Post 314 is honoring your for your service to the community," said Wynn. Lorah was also presented a certificate thanking him for his service.Fourth grade students honored were Cara Polumbo, daughter of Kerry and Robert Polumbo, a student at Mahoning Elementary School; Isabelle Meckes, daughter of Brian and Leslie Meckes, a student at Franklin Elementary School; Gallilea Villagomez, daughter of Juan and Karen Villagomez, and a student at Ss. Peter and Paul School; and Gavin Sherer, son of Sarah and Cory Sherer and a student at East Penn Elementary School.The children wrote an essay using the theme, "My Colorful Heritage" and colored a poster. Each of the students received a cash prize.Polumbo wrote that the people of the United States have a colorful heritage. She cited the colorful sights and sounds can be found in America.Meckes wrote that when she thinks of her heritage she thinks of her grandfather who was in the service.Sherer wrote about the Declaration of Independence and Villagomez wrote about her colorful heritage of ancestors who came from Germany, Bethlehem, Israel; Yugoslavia, Egypt and Ireland.
