Despite a drizzle, more than 1,000 people turned out at the scene of the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension. The ceremony was held along Route 940 in Kidder Township. Governor John S. Fine used a silver spade to turn the first section of earth. Several Carbon County notables participated, including Judge James C. McCready. The Mauch Chunk High School Band, directed by Miss Margaret Kline, participated.
