Sunday was just not a good day for a Tamaqua man.

As reported in Tuesday's TIMES NEWS, Derek A. Shellhamer, 23, of 307 Arlington St., ran afoul of Rush Township police after allegedly being involved in an accident on Taggertsville Road, in a stolen vehicle.As Shellhamer was dealing with that accident, Tamaqua Patrolman Thomas Rodgers was filing criminal charges against him, related to a Feb. 24 incident.Shellhamer was a passenger that day in a vehicle being operated by Amanda L. Ramirez, which was stopped on the Number 11 Hill (SR209) at 2:20 a.m. Ramirez did not have a valid driver's license and a routine check indicated that Shellhamer also did not have a valid license.Rodgers, assisted by Coaldale Patroman Charles Blesse, searched the vehicle then its occupants prior to placing them in a squad car.Officers found small, white, waxed paper bags containing brown powder, a plastic bag with green vegetable matter, a large metal spoon and a hypodermic needle in Shellhamer's pockets.Shellhamer was not very co-operative, struggling with the officers.The green matter tested positive for marijuana, while the brown powder tested positive for heroin.Rodgers charged Shellhamer with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.He was arraigned before duty District Judge Anthony Kilker, Shenandoah, who set bail at 10 percent of $25,000.
