County honored on birthday by federal and state citations

Citations extending best wishes and congratulations to Schuylkill County on observance of its 200th anniversary were delivered by Congressman Tim Holden and State Senator David Argall to the Schuylkill County Commissioners at the opening ceremony of observation of the county's bicentennial Tuesday morning in Pottsville.

Holden delivered the proclamation in person but could not stay for a program which took place Tuesday morning in front of the courthouse building in Pottsville because he had to be in Washington D.C. for an important session on finance spending. His proclamation read:"Today, the residents and officials of Schuylkill County have come together to recognize and open our bicentennaial celebration. Originally carved out of both Northampton and Berks counties under decree of Governor Simon Snyder, the county was born in March of 1811 and given the name of Schuylkill, for the river which runs through it. Initially consisting of nine townships, Schuylkill County began to grow and prosper under its agricultural and mining industries. For generations, Schuylkill County would cement its reputation with a hard work ethic and deep cultural roots that have survived the test of time. Over its history, Schuylkill County became a melting pot unto itself with scores immigrants from all ethnicities congregating in the rolling hills and valleys, creating more and more diverse yet connected communities.As we celebrate the birth of our county, we cannot forget that the uniqueness of Schuylkill County heritage is also what separates us from our surrounding counties. Therefore, as Congressman of the 17th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, it is my pleasure to bestow my best wishes and personal congratulations to Schuylkill County for reaching its 200th birthday. As a life long resident, I couldn't be prouder of where I come from and hope for another 200 years of success."State Senator David Argall delivered a citation which read as follows:"The Senate of Pennsylvania is always pleased to recognize those esteemed communities which, through the observance of significant events in their history, contribute to preserving the continuity of Pennsylvania's great heritage. Schuylkill County is celebrating its bicentennial anniversary during a ceremy, which is being held on March 1, 2011, in Pottsville, the county seat.Schuylkill County was created on March 1, 1811, from parts of Berks and Northampton counties and was named for the Schuylkill River. In 1818 portions of Columbia and Luzerne counties were added, expanding the county to 780 square miles. It is located in the heart of the Anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. The newly formed Schuylkill County became the 45th out of this Commonwealth's 67 counties and included nine townships, which have since expanded to 67 diverse and culturally rich municipalties.Therefore, the Senate of the Commonweath of Pennsylvania congratulates Schuylkill County upon the joyous celebration of its 200th anniversary and we offer best wishes for continued growth and prosperty in the yhears to come."The citation issued by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives was delivered by Argall on behalf of State Representatives Jerry Knowles, Mike Tobash and Neal Goodman who represent Schuylkill County. They had early morning meetings scheduled in Harrisburg and could not attend. Their proclamation read:"It always is with a deep sense of pride that the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania recognizes those communities that strive to preserve the traditions of the past as they encourage the strength and growth of community spirit in the present and forfuture generations. Schuylkill County is being honored upon its 200th anniversary. Formed from parts of other counties, Schuylkill County residents contributed greatly to the anthracite mining and railroad industries and is lauded as the state leader in a Christmas tree and potato production. The county now consists of 35 townships amd nearly 151,000 residents. In addition, one-fifth of the county is designated farmland.Throughout its history, Schuylkill County has been blessed with dedicated civic leaders who have helped it to grow and flourish, as well as deligent and productive citizens who have helped it become an inspiring presence in this Commonwealth.Therefore, the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvamia pays tribute to Schuylkill County upon the momentous occasion of its bicentennial; affirmatively states that its wealth of contributions over the past two hundred years is a vital facet of this Commonwealth's rich history; extends sincere best wishes for the continuation of its most worthy endeavors in the years to come."The commissioners adopted a proclamation which proclaimed the 200th birthday of Schuylkill County and invite all residents, natives and friends of the county to join in celebrating the bicentennial throughout the year.
