DFC fund driveDiligence Fire Company No. 1, Summit Hill, has launched its 2011 fund drive, the major source of revenue that helps the company meet expenses associated with truck payments and maintenance, among other costs.A huge portion of the proceeds will go toward loan payments for the 2008 KME pumper the company purchased. The purchase was made with the help of a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant of $284,250, although the company had to borrow over $100,000 to meet the purchase price. That resulted in a monthly payment of $700.DFC is also in need of new turnout gear for its firefighters since about two-thirds of the force utilized aging gear that is not serviceable. It is projected it will cost the company $44,000 to bring its force to full compliance regarding turnout gear.As it moves forward, the company is facing several major decisions. They include: 1984 Seagraves Ladder Truck, $125,000 in minimal repairs, $250,000 to refurbish or $550,000 to replace; self-contained breathing apparatus, $60,000 to upgrade; Jaws of Life equipment, $38,000 to replace; and pagers and radios, $60,000 in order to be in compliance with FCC regulations by Jan. 1, 2013.Residents are asked to consider the huge financial issues facing the company and make their annual contribution by returning it in the envelope provided in the recent mailing. The donations can also be dropped off at the office of the borough secretary, John's Auto Repair or Breslin's Hilltop News. For more information or questions about the fire company, contact Fire Chief Shawn Hoben, (570) 645-0223, or President Larry Black, (570) 657-0967.Infants baptizedTwo infants were baptized into the Catholic faith during recent ceremonies held in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill. The Rev.
