Motorist suffers medical problem, causes accident on SR443

Several cars were damaged Wednesday afternoon when a male driver suffered a medical problem while driving east on SR443 in Lehighton. The incident began when several motorists notified the Carbon County Communications Center of an erratic driver operating a van east just east of the Graverville light and swerving into the opposite lanes and off the roadway. A short time later an accident was reported on the parking lot of the Beacon Diner. When police arrived they found an incoherent male behind the wheel of the van suffering a diabetic problem after his blood sugar took a sudden drop. The van apparently struck a vehicle while traveling along the roadway then entered the lot of the diner striking and spinning around a parked car sitting in front of the restaurant. The driver was treated at the scene by Lehighton paramedics and transported to the Lehighton hospital. Lehighton police are investigating the incident.
