11 locals picked for Via Classic

11 local seniors have been chosen to participate in the 36th annual Via All-Star Basketball Classic which raises funds for Via of the Lehigh Valley's programs for adults and children with disabilities. The Via All-Star Classic is presented by First Niagara Bank.

Via Super Saturday will be held at Northampton Community College on April 2 and games begin at 10:30 a.m. with a girls contest between the Colonial League and LVC West. The Colonial League boys and LVC West boys will then meet at noon.At 1:30, the Via All-Star & Special Olympics Shoot Out sponsored by Coordinated Health, will take place.Games resume at 2 when the LVC East and Mountain Valley Conference girls battle, followed by a boys matchup at 3:30 between the LVC East and MVC.Game format will follow the college model of 20 minute halves, 30 second shot clock for boys and 35 seconds for girls, and college 3-point line.The Via All-Star Classic Banquet will be held at Freedom High School on Wednesday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. to honor the Via All-Stars. The Via Teams of the Year, Players of the Year and Scholar Athletes will be announced at the banquet. The Lehigh Valley High School Basketball Hall of Fame will induct new members at the Via All-Star Banquet. Hall of Fame inductees will be announced in the coming weeks.The keynote speaker is Napoleon McCallum, one of the greatest collegiate tailbacks of all-time. McCallum ran over, through and around the opposition during his collegiate career with the United States Naval Academy. A legendary name at the Naval Academy, McCallum set 26-school rushing and return records, including single season rushing yards (1,587) and career marks for rushing yards (4,179), kick return yards (2,197) and punt return yards (858). In 1985, McCallum, Navy's Co-Captain, led the team in yards rushing, receiving, all-purpose, punt returning, kick returning, and was the team's leading scorer. Following graduation, the Los Angeles Raiders of the National Football League drafted him. Although his professional career was interrupted, McCallum was able to play a year with the Raiders before reassignment during his five-year military commitment took him out of the Los Angeles Area.
