Woman who allegedly assaulted officer has preliminary hearing

A Lehighton woman who became unruly while in the custody of police after she was arrested on various charges was scheduled to appear before court.

Brooke Huntington, 33, of 4008 Long Run Road, was set to have a preliminary hearing this morning before District Judge Bruce Appleton of Palmerton.Huntington faces charges on three counts of persistent disorderly conduct, two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count each of aggravated assault, simple assault, and terroristic threats.She is currently incarcerated in Carbon County Prison under $30,000, 10-percent bail.According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Robert Hontz of the Franklin Township Police Department:On Feb. 7, Hontz was dispatched to 832 Main Road, where he came upon a vehicle into a snow bank, according to the affidavit.Upon arrival, Hontz said he found the listed vehicle in a snow bank, with Huntington in the front seat behind the wheel with the vehicle running, the affidavit says.Hontz said he then approached the vehicle, which was a black GMC pick-up. Upon speaking with Huntington, Hontz said he detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the inside of the vehicle.Hontz said he asked Huntington if she was drinking, to which the driver replied "a few." Hontz then asked Huntington to step out of the vehicle, but she was unable to stand on her own.Hontz said he had to assist Huntington to the front of the cruiser. While talking with her, Hontz said he detected the odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from her facial area.As he attempted to initiate field sobriety tests, he was informed by the driver that she was Huntington.Hontz said he advised Huntington that he would explain and demonstrate each of the tests to her before she was to begin.The first test was the finger tip test, which Huntington failed. She failed and refused each of his tests, which prompted Hontz to place Huntington under arrest for suspicion of driver under the influence.Huntington immediately became aggressive and combative, scratching Hontz several times. A substantial amount of force was used to overcome her resistance.Once cuffed, Huntington was placed into the rear seat of the cruiser. She then began to kick the inside of the doors of the cruiser, and was spitting all over the cruiser along with smashing her head off the divider.Hontz said he then transported Huntington to Lehighton Hospital. While at the hospital while they were sitting in the waiting room, Huntington began to kick and spit at Hontz.Hontz was assisted at the hospital by Mahoning Township officer Jeff Frace. As they attempted to control Huntington, Hontz was kicked several times, which caused minor injuries to his left hand.Huntington continued acting out, before she was removed from the hospital and transported to the Franklin Township Police Department.While at the station, Huntington began to kick the wall, causing damage to the heating register and wall. Huntington continued to kick the file cabinet.After being told extensively several times to cease and desist her actions, Huntington began to threaten Hontz by advising him that "You would not live thru the night".
