Volunteers needed for MDA summer camp

Imagine reliving your childhood, but in the body of a child who lives with a neuromuscular disease where the simple act of walking is the ultimate challenge. When you ask a young person with a muscle disease what the best week of the year is for them, they will say the week that they spend at the Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp.

In order to continue to make this camp possible, volunteers are needed June 11 through June 18. MDA Summer Camp is located in Worcester, and is roughly 45 minutes from the Allentown area.Volunteers should come to camp with a cheerful, warm and congenial personality, but above all, volunteers should possess a deep desire to help a "special" person. The camp is for them, but without your help it would not be a reality. There are many ways to donate your time to the camp this summer. Volunteer counselors assist individuals with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular disorders with daily activities. This may include pushing their wheelchairs or helping a camper with walking, eating, toileting, bathing and dressing. Volunteers are needed as medical staff or to assist with pre-camp planning. The campers who will be attending this session are both male and female and range in age from 6 to 17 years of age. Their degrees of disability vary since not all of them use wheelchairs; some are able to walk but may need assistance. Not to worry - MDA provides training. Both male and female counselors are needed, but since the majority of youngsters with muscular dystrophy are boys, there is a great need for male volunteers. Anyone interested should contact Kristin Brown at (610) 391-1977 for a volunteer application packet. Also, Brown would be happy to speak to clubs or organizations.
