Poster contest to promote Palmerton Centennial fete

Think you've got what it takes to help promote Palmerton's centennial celebration?

If so, then every effort should be made to compete in a poster contest to commemorate the 2012 Centennial of the incorporation of the borough.Sponsored by the Palmerton Area Historical Society, the contest is open only to those who reside in the Palmerton Area School District.Cindy Gasper, historical society member, said "Palmerton is filled with many artists.""The idea came from needing a poster to display in the windows of the businesses around town to kick off the Centennial and remind the residents of the landmark year we have approached," Gasper said. "The Centennial will be the biggest celebration Palmerton has seen in a long time."Gasper said Peter Kern, historical society member, is also working on a historical pamphlet to be sold at different events."By offering the poster as a contest, we thought it would be desirable to give all the local artists an opportunity to be a 'part of history'", she said. "We're offering cash prizes and publicity for the artists' who create the best poster."Whoever turns in the winning submission will cop a grand prize of $250. Five $50 honorable mention awards will also be given out. Those interested in the contest must submit an entry form. All entries must be received by May 31 at the Palmerton Area Heritage Center, located at 410 Delaware Avenue. As for the guidelines of the contest, the poster image must be no smaller than 11 inches by 17 inches high. Larger images may be submitted, but must retain proportions of 11x17.Perhaps most importantly, the poster must promote the 100th anniversary of the borough's 1912 incorporation. It may include relevant images, text, and graphic or historic elements. Finally, the poster must include text prominently displayed on the poster that says Incorporation of the Borough of Palmerton 1912-2012.As for the terms and conditions of the contest, judging will be done by a panel selected by the Palmerton Area Historical Society. Notification of the outcome will be given to all participants by July 15.Prizes will be awarded at an appropriate event during the celebration year. The Palmerton Area Historical Society has the right to retain and display any and all poster submissions through Jan. 31, 2013.Also, the historical society has full and exclusive rights to reproduce any and all submissions - whether they are award winners or not - for sale or promotional use through Jan. 31, 2013.After that date, artists may pick up their works at the Heritage Center. For more information, call 610-824-6954, or email
