After two weeks of winter weather delayed the start of the season, the Eastern Schuylkull Recreation Commission's winter basketball league finally tipped-off on Wednesday night at the Tamaqua Elementary School gymnasium.

On opening night, Joe's Place, Ryan's Oil & Heating, R.R. Frey Services and Cuz-N-Joe's Place all emerged victorious.Joe's-Sokol ClubJoe's Place opened the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back as they posted a 53-47 victory over Sokol Club.Former Wilkes University standout Tom Kresge topped Joe's Place with a game-high 19 points.For Sokol Club, Tony Stoeckel, Dennis McGinley and Steve Haldeman all had 10 points apiece.Ryan's Oil-Matika'sThey might have a new name, but the results were the same, as Ryan's Oil & Heating (formerly Service Electric) coasted to a 53-36 victory over Matika's Lawn Care/Blazosky Funeral Home.Joe Schaeffer drained three treys and scored 13 points to lead Ryan's Oil & Heating, while Jeff Peel tacked on 12.Dan Matika and Peter Balogach paced Matika's Lawn Care/Blazosky Funeral Home with eight points apiece.R.R. Frey-MidasR.R. Frey Services raced out to a 35-17 halftime lead, en route to a 62-40 victory over Midas Touch Hair Salon.Dave Wilson scored 15 points to lead R.R. Frey Services, while Joe Tamagini chipped in 11.For Midas Touch Hair Salon, Anthony Petrulsky and John Kneht connected for 12 points apiece.Legendz-Cuz-N-Joe'sIn the highest scoring game of the night, Jon Veet led Cuz-N-Joe's Place to a 66-57 victory over University Legendz.Veet scored 31 points to lead Cuz-N-Joe's. Curt Roberts added 10 points.University Legendz was led by J.R. Graver's 22 points.
