A former star athlete from a Schuylkill County high school was found dead in woods near Bloomsburg and the circumstances of his death are under investigation.

The body David Alan Lynch, 34, of 44 Todd Manor Lane, Locust Township, near Numidia, was found Wednesday in the Roaring Creek Tract of the Weiser State Forest in Columbia County.Lynch was an outstanding football player for Mahanoy Area High School where he was a member of the 1995 Class A Eastern Conference champions. He was also an Associated Press all state first team selection in 1995 and earned a full football scholarship to Duke University.Lynch was missing for five days until his body was found. An autopsy is scheduled at the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township, to determine the cause of death.After graduating from Duke Lynch entered the state police academy in Hershey and was a state trooper first assigned to the Frackville barracks. However, he has had a troubled life since becoming a trooper. At the time of his death he was suspended without pay by the state police.He had two driving under the influence (DUI) arrests in 2009. One DUI arrest occurred near his residence after police responded to a reported domestic incident. In that case he was also charged with resisting arrest. He was scheduled to go on trial on Tuesday, Feb. 8, in Columbia County court on the DUI and resisting charges.A published report indicated that at the time of his second DUI arrest he had threatened to kill himself.Lynch's body was found in Conyngham Township by police who located his pickup truck parked off of SR54 leading to a wooded area. A search of the area located his body. He was suspended by the state police on July 7, 2009, without pay pending the resolution of the pending criminal charges.The first DUI arrest occurred on March 1, 2009, when he was found unresponsive in his truck at 4:38 p.m. in Locust Township. On June 16, 2009, police were called to the Lynch home. When they arrived he was observed leaving the home and speeding off in his truck. Police followed and observed him going through at least three stop signs before stopping.He was placed under arrest and transported for a blood test. He struggled with officers at the hospital and made threats to others and also that he would take his own life. He was later committed to the hospital for pscychological evaluation.Police said they found a large amount of ammunition along with a loaded gun in Lynch's truck at the second DUI arrest. A blood test revealed Lynch had a .29 BAC at the time of his arrest.
