A former Jim Thorpe resident admitted in Carbon County court on Tuesday to shooting his uncle during a family dispute.

James W. Freiling, 28, of Tamaqua, pleaded guilty before Senior Judge Richard W. Webb to one count each of aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime.Freiling was arrested on June 16, 2009, at 225 South St., Jim Thorpe. Borough police were dispatched to the home to a report of an altercation and shooting incident.Upon arrival officers were met at the front door by David Freiling who was complaining of a gunshot wound to his lower right back, just above the waistline. He was later flown to St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill.David Freiling identified James Freiling as the shooter. Police learned that David Freiling was the defendant's uncle and there was an argument at the residence in which the two shared with other family members.Police said James Freiling shot his uncle with Makarow 9 mm handgun.Freiling told Webb he regretted what had happened.Webb accepted the plea but deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation (PSI) which will include a mental health evaluation.In exchange for the plea, other counts of aggravated and simple assault and recklessly endangering were dropped.
