A 49-year-old Lansford Marine veteran who died Saturday after spending the night in a car in near-zero temperatures died of hypothermia, with alcohol consumption as a contributing factor, Schuylkill County coroner Joseph Lipsett said Tuesday.

The manner in which Alan J. Kurtz, of 322 W. Front St., died is being considered accidental, he said, pending the results of an investigation by Lansford Detective Jack Soberick and the Carbon County District Attorney's Office.An autopsy on Kurtz was performed Monday by Schuylkill County pathologist Dr. Richard Bindie. Authorities are waiting for the results of toxicology tests.Kurtz was found by his wife at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday after sleeping in the car overnight, wearing a jacket and covered with a blanket. He was taken to St. Luke Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale, where he died at about 3 p.m.Details of why Kurtz slept in the car were unavailable Tuesday.Lipsett handled the death ruling because Coaldale, where Kurtz died, is in Schuylkill County.Kurtz had served with the U.S. Marine Corps for 10 years during Operation Desert Storm.
