Driver facing hit/run charge

A Schuylkill County driver is facing a charge of hit and run following an incident that occurred on Sunday, Jan. 9. It was one of three crashes on county roadways investigated by state police at Schuylkill Haven.

Troopers said about 1 a.m. James Robert Schaal, 20, of Port Carbon, was driving a 1990 Ford F150 pickup truck southbound on Peach Mountain Road, in Norwegian Township, when he lost control on the snow covered road. The truck traveled in a southeast direction crossing over the yellow line and over the northbound lane. The truck then went off the road and struck a tree with its right front corner bumper.After impact Schaal and his passenger, William A. Wallace, 20, of Pottsville, fled the scene. Troopers said summary traffic charges will be filed against Schaal. Damages to the truck were moderate and no injuries reported.A one vehicle crash occurred about 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, along Seltzer Road in Norwegian Township. Troopers said Christine M. Disabella, 37, of Pottsville, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer eastbound when she traveled over a patch of slush. She lost control of the vehicle and it began to travel into the westbound lane. The vehicle then returned to the eastbound lane and began to spin in a counter-clockwise direction.The vehicle traveled onto the eastbound berm and continued about 60 feet when the passenger's side front door impacted with the guard rail. After impact the vehicle spun clockwise and came to rest against the guard fail facing south.Disabella was not injured. Three juveniles, two males ages 15 and eight, and a female age 14, all from Pottsville, all sustained minor injuries and taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-E. Norwegian St., Pottsville. Troopers cited Disabella for driving a vehicle at an (un) safe speed.Troopers investigated a crash about 7 p.m. on Saturday along SR61 in Port Clinton. Troopers said James Demcher Jr., 40, of St. Clair, was northbound operating a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt when he attempted to move from the right lane to the left and lost control. The vehicle began to spin in a clockwise direction and traveled north for about 54 feet across both northbound lanes.The car continued spinning and traveled an additional 70 feet north across the shoulder before the driver's side front fender and door area struck a concrete culvert and embankment. After impact the car again spun north in a clockwise direction for about 34 feet before coming to rest facing southwest along the berm.Demcher sustained a minor injury but did not require medical attention. He was cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.
