Kindergarten registration set for Lehighton district

Kindergarten registration in the Lehighton Area School District will be held on March 1, 2, 3, and 4 at the District Administrative Building, 1000 Union St. (near the high school).

Appointments, scheduled from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:45 p.m. will avoid delays during the registration process. To schedule one, contact Brenda Strausberger at (610) 377-7880, ext. 2.The website at

www.lehighton.org is also available to view the necessary forms required for registration and possibly complete the forms before coming for an appointment.In the event of school delay, appointments may change. If there is a two-hour delay, appointments will begin at 10 a.m. and all appointments scheduled between 8 and 10 a.m. will be rescheduled. In the event of a snow day, all appointments will be rescheduled.Children must be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2011 to be eligible for kindergarten. Children without kindergarten experience who will be 6 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2011, are eligible to register for first grade.The intention to have a child enter first grade must be stated in writing at the time of registration. The youngster will be tested before the opening of school in August to determine readiness for first grade.A state-issued birth certificate or other acceptable proof of age and name is required for each child who is registered. Even if these papers are not available at the time of registration, the child should be registered. The document must be provided before the child will be admitted to school in August. Parent photo ID is requested at registration along with two proofs of residence.State law requires that all children entering school for the first time must have written proof of the following immunizations: four doses of tetanus/diphtheria (one dose on or after fourth birthday), three doses of poliomyelitis/infantile paralysis, two doses of measles, two doses of mumps, one dose of rubella (German measles), three doses of hepatitis B, two doses of varicella (chicken pox) vaccine or history of disease.Parents or guardians should bring the necessary immunization records to register the child. It is optional to provide the school with a social security number.Vision and hearing screening will be given to all youngsters during the registration time. The child's photo will be taken for identification purposes.At registration, parents will sign for a date and time to have the kindergarten readiness assessment administered to each child. These assessments will take place May 3, 4, 5, and 6, at the administration building.
