Indians, Bears win MVC volleyball matches

Lehighton and Pleasant Valley came away with win s in Mountain Valley Conference girls volleyball action on Tuesday night.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALLPanther Vy.-LourdesIn a matchup of Schuylkill League Division 2 contenders, Lourdes defeated Panthers Valley, 17-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-15.The victory all but assured Lourdes of the division title and a berth in the league playoffs. Both teams entered the match with 8-3 league records. Lourdes now has a one-game lead with its lone remaining match against Schuylkill Haven (1-11).The Panthers (8-4, 10-4) were led by Amy Yusella (15 kills, five blocks, 4 service points); Dianna Focht (eight kills, six blocks, eight service points); Chrissy Micholik (seven kills, 12 assists, eight service points); and Jacinda Ruzicka (nine service points).Weatherly-NativityNativity swept Weatherly, 25-7, 25-10, 25-16, in a Schuylkill League match.Sarah Dolinsky had a solid game for the Wreckers (3-8, 5-14) with eight digs, four blocks and three kills. Also playing well were Jess Adamczyk (five digs, four blocks, three kills) and Alicia Panzarella (11 digs, two kills).PM West-LehightonLehighton posted a 25-7, 25-15, 25-17 sweep of Pocono Mountain West in Mountain Valley Conference action,Leading the way for the Indians was Krista Rehrig had 13 assists, two aces, three kills and two digs. Natalie Zurn had eight digs, three assists and three kills while teammate Tiffany Thompson had seven kills, two digs and three aces.Lehighton also won the JV game, 25-14, 25-14.Jim Thorpe-PottsvillePottsville swept Jim Thorpe in Schuylkill League action, 25-11, 25-5, 25-14.Key players for the Lady Olympians in the contest were Shannon Green with four blocks, Jaclyn Mefford with three digs, and Delaney Varano with three blocks.Pottsville also won the JV game, 25-18, 25-20.PM East-Pleasant Vy.Pocono Mountain East felt the wrath of Pleasant Valley as the Bears remained undefeated in the Mountain Valley Conference with a 26-24, 25-14, 25-13 win.Breanna Joseph had 10 blocks in the game and broke the school record for blocks in a career with 263, overtaking Brittany Hanley's previous mark of 253. Joseph also contributed 11 kills and an ace. Teammates Kiersten Griesback (10 assists, seven digs); Courtney Miller(seven kills); Mackenzie Dorney (three aces, six digs); and Andrea Giardina (six digs, two aces) also played well for Pleasant Valley.With one match left in the regular season, the Bears have clinched the number one seed for the MVC playoffs and will host the semifinals next Tuesday.FIELD HOCKEYNorthwestern-Pen ArgylNorthwestern pulled out a hard-fought 2-1 Colonial League win over Pen Argyl.In a game that saw the Lady Tigers outshoot Pen Argyl 17-8, Sara Jones and Caileigh Landrigan scored the Northwestern goals. Lauren Horner and Hannah Beville had assists on the scores.Lorraine Feinour had 10 saves in goal for Northwestern.With the win, the Tigers improve to 11-4-3 overall and 9-4-3 in the CL.Palmerton-Bethlehem Cath.Palmerton rolled to a 5-0 non-league victory over Bethlehem Catholic.Morgan Myers had a pair of goals for the Blue Bombers while Kelsey Eaton, Kyla Rodrigues and Greta Hartsell scored one goal apiece.Palmerton finished with a commanding 26-5 advantage in shots. Bomber goalie Devon Smith made two saves to record the shutout.
