Palmerton woman celebrates 86 years

Published July 20. 2011 05:01PM

June Heiney, a resident at the Village in Palmerton, observed her 86th birthday on June 24.

The daughter of the late Olive and Victor Behler, she was born in Tamaqua, and attended elementary school there until her parents moved to Lower Towamensing in Palmerton. She then went to the Aquashicola school where she graduated as a 10th-grade student in 1941. She went on to complete her education and graduated from the Stephen S. Palmer High School in Palmerton in 1943.

June was employed as a sampler in the testing department of the New Jersey Zinc Co. laboratory.

This was during World War II and Kenneth Heiney, who had held that position, enlisted in the Army and went off to do his duty as a soldier.

Ken came home on furlough and stopped in at the laboratory to visit his friends. June looked up from her work, saw Ken in his uniform, their eyes met and it was love at first sight. They were married on June 11, 1946.

They are the parents of two sons, Joseph, a graduate of Shippensburg University, is a professor of economics at Elmhurst College, a suburb of Chicago; and Samuel, a graduate of Kutztown University, recently retired after 35 years as a kindergarten teacher in the Palmerton School District.

During the busy years of being a wife and mother, June found time to serve the Franklin, Delaware and S.S. Palmer High School as a crossing guard for which she received a reward for 25 years of faithful service.

Her husband died in 1995.

June is a lifetime member of Salem United Methodist Church in Aquashicola, where she served two years as president of the Christian Caring Ministry. She enjoys the monthly 'get-togethers' of the Church's Visitation Team. They keep her in touch with church happenings and bring her well wishes from her friends.

June's special birthday treat was a visit from her son, Joseph, from Illinois, plus visits or greetings from son, Sam, his wife, and her five grandchildren.
