A Palmerton man was killed when his pickup truck crashed this morning along Smith Gap Road in Eldred Township, Monroe County. The crash occurred about 2 a.m. State police at Lehighton said David A. Smiley, 45, was operating a 1997 Ford F150 pickup eastbound, just west of the Carbon County line, when he lost control for unknown reasons. The truck went onto the berm and struck a snow embankment which caused the truck to roll over. Smiley was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers indicated speed was a factor in the crash. Reportedly, Smiley was partially ejected. Responding to the scene were volunteers from the Aquashicola and Kunkletown fire companies. The road was closed for several hours.
