A dangerous travel day on the turnpike

The strong wind gusts caused dangerous driving conditions for motorists on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Monday morning, stranding some motorists.

The photo on the right shows one trip that was halted by a snow drift along the southbound lane.As troopers and tow trucks worked to free one vehicle in the area of the Hickory Run Plaza, a sport utility vehicle struck a large tow truck, seriously injuring the driver (top photo), who was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital Trauma Center in Allentown by the Lake Harmony ambulance. State Police at Pocono are investigating. The two southbound lanes were closed for several hours.Remnants of the intense storm that blasted the Northeast last weekend were still being felt in the local area in the form of black ice, which was blamed for four accidents this morning on Route 902 between New Mahoning and Bugzie's Mountain. For details, see page 2.
