Jury favors doctors in malpractice suit

A Carbon County jury panel found in favor of two doctors in a malpratice suit.

The panel ruled that Dr. Kailash Makhija, of Lehighton, and Dr. Kanwal S. Khan, of Palmerton, were not negligent in their treatment of Ann Castro, of 832 Main Rd., Lehighton.Castro and her husband, David, sued the two doctors and their practices claiming she received negligent treatment. Dr. Makhija and Dr. Kahn, treated Mrs. Castro for severe abdomen pain. The pain was attributed to two abscesses she developed.The doctors defense attorney claimed that the two provided the high standard of care required by law and were not negligent.Mrs. Castro became ill in August and Septmeber 2004 and was admitted to the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. On the day she was discharged, several hours later she was brought to the emergency room with the severe pain.The trial began with jury selection on Nov. 15. Testimony was heard from numerous expert witnesses called by both parties that included many doctors. The testimony began on Nov. 16 and concluded on Nov. 24.President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II presided at the trial.
