Visitors to the Carbon Career & Technical Institute will notice the sound of sawing and hammering, even hours after school has left out.

CCTI is continuing the $15.4 million building-wide renovation and expansion effort begun last fall; the first serious update to the school since opening in 1966, and a physical reflection of the successes the school has seen of late that includes additional programming and updated curriculum.Damon Kane, project architect and president of Godshall Kane Architects LLC, who heads the project, is confident that the building's updates will be complete before the start of the 2011-2012 school year.Kane and David Kost, Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds, reported a few obstacles the project has run into.A classroom on the second floor, currently used for biology, was originally planned to be split into two separate classrooms with a partition. Existing duct work would obstruct the wall and after much discussion it was decided that the frame for the partition would be installed and the rest of the purchased materials would be stored for potential use at a later time. For now, the room will continue to house the biology class for which it is well equipped.Originally overlooked, four hose reels containing unregulated oxy-acetaline, used for gas welding, were discovered after work on a lab classroom was complete. A manifold system and additional piping will be installed at an estimated cost of $17,000, which includes overtime man-hours in order to have the lab up and running as quick as possible.On a smaller scale, the CCTI Joint Operating Committee passed several motions that could be considered a part of the overall renovation efforts. On recommendation of the Administrative Director, David Reinbold, the school will purchase items for the Electronics area at a cost of $49,955.0. This includes 20 computer systems for the lab area, 12 all-in-one systems for electronics CAI, a teacher workstation for the Theory Room, a system server, 2 teacher laptop computers, 2 classroom/lab area printers and any shipping and handling costs.These will be purchased by funds from the Furniture, Furnishings and Equipment budget.The committee also approved, pending appropriate paperwork, the allowance adjustments for additional racking in the data closet to expand room for more connections at a cost of $1,599.00, and wire and data devices in administration offices at $2,214.00.Also on the agenda, the committee approved the treasurer's report for October, showing a final balance of $3,031,452.79 in the general fund, and $41,898.32 in the Student Activities account.The committee approved motions to pay bills from the general fund, accept the Carbon Career & Technical Institute Foundation report, as presented with a standing balance of $41,500.15, the CCTI House Building Project expenses as of Oct. 31, the CCCTI Renovation Project Expenditure Report, and the architect's renovation status reports.
