Former Jim Thorpe fire chief Bruce Shanfelt, who resigned in May after serving for eight years, was the honoree at a testimonial dinner in Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall. He received at least a half dozen plaques and/or citations. He had resigned to spend more time with his family. Pat McGinley, who succeeded him as fire chief, praised Shanfelt, stating, "The transition has gone fairly well mainly because all the tracks were laid before the train left the station."
