Meet the Author

On Saturday, Nov. 13, from 1-3 p.m., Berks County author Clemson Page will be at a Meet the Author event at the Dimmick Library Friends House in Jim Thorpe.Page's novel "Up Home" is about a family in a Pennsylvania anthracite coal mining town in the early 1900s. The story starts in 1903, less than a year after President Theodore Roosevelt engineered the historic negotiated settlement of the great 1902 Anthracite Strike. It is a time of festering hostilities between labor and management in coal mining regions throughout the U.S. In the novel, the father is killed in a mining accident and young David, age 9, goes to work as a "breaker boy" to help support the family. The story follows David as he grows up working in the mines, and examines the conditions in the mines, the skills miners need to develop, and the ongoing labor/management troubles. The Dimmick Library Friends House (formerly the Library Annex building) is located at 58 Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. For more information, call the library at (570) 325-2131.
