At Slatington's regular meeting of council held Monday night Police Chief David Rachman said that the Department of Justice's grant for bulletproof vests was approved and that he's sending the officers to get fitted.

Council voted to retain Steckel and Stopp as the Borough Solicitor for 2011, Council accepted Center Valley Construction's bid of $5,750 for the main roof of Springside Fire Co. and Councilman Daniel Stevens gave an update on the first phase of the Memorial Park project."They [Livengood Excavating] poured the curbs," Stevens said. "They formed the sidewalk today. Hopefully they'll be moving along this week."Stevens also announced that the Running of the Nuts 5K Run & Walk, which benefits the Walnut Street Playground, will be held Nov. 20 at 9 a.m. at the Slatington Trailhead. wspa@ptd.net for an application.In other business, Gary Phillips, who is chairman of the borough's water authority, said that the borough has to start paying back the PennVEST sewer project, which has a final completion date of May 31, 2011."We're moving in the right direction for this project," Phillips said. "It's a big project, and it really has helped."Based on the way billings are done now and on the fact that 80 percent of the borough pays their bills, the water authority recommended that borough residents pay $28 per quarter."This may be an ideal time to restructure water and sewer to make it more palatable for everybody," Kris Burek, who is chairperson of sewer/solid waste, said.As far as water and sewer rates, nothing was acted on at the meeting. The water authority's suggestions will go to committee first.
