A Luzerne County woman was given a long jail term on Monday in Carbon County court on a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) of a controlled substance.

Krystal Mary Derhammer, 23, of Edwardsville, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to sere 90 days to five years in jail on the charge.Derhammer was arrested on Oct. 28, 2009, along the northeast extension of the turnpike in Kidder Township. A blood test revealed the presence of a controlled substance in her system.In a plea bargain the district attorney offered Derhammer avoid some jail time by entering a inpatient rehab program. However, Derhammer failed to do so.Yesterday she asked the court to give her time to find a inpatient program, but that was objected to by Assistant District Attorney James Lavelle. Lavelle told Serfass that the plea bargain was made in April and she gotten two continuances since then and still did not go into a rehab program. Serfass agreed that she had enough time to find a program.In addition to the jail time, she was ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, get a D&A evaluation, pay court costs, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole, license suspended for 18 months and must render three hours of community service per month when released on bail and serving the balance of her sentence.She will begin the jail term on Nov. 15 at 9 a.m.
