Carbon driver injured in crash

A Carbon County driver was injured in a one vehicle crash in Schuylkill County. Rush Township police said the crash occurred about 2 a.m on Friday, Oct. 22, along SR54.

Police said Randall D. Smith, 52, of Nesquehoning, was westbound when, for unknown reasons, his 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt left the road on the right side. The vehicle traveled for 116 feet then struck a utility pole guide wire. The car sheared off the top half of the pole bringing down the pole and live wires. The vehicle was then airborne for about 38 feet and then traveled another 18 feet before striking a mailbox and ditch. After hitting the ditch the car became airborne a second time for about 24 feet, landing on its side, then rolled over three times for 57 feet before coming to rest on its roof.Smith was trapped in the car and had to be extricated by rescue personnel. He was then transported to the Hometown auction site where he was picked up by Medevac helicopter and flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.Assisting police at the scene were volunteers from the Tamaqua Rescue Squad, Hometown and Quakake fire companies, and ambulances from Ryan Township and Shenandoah ALS unit.
