Doubles teams fall at districts

The Pleasant Valley soccer team blanked Stroudsburg to finish Mountain Valley Conference regular season play unbeaten.

In other scholastic action, area teams had a quick exit from the District 11 Class AA Doubles Tennis Tournament on Thursday.TENNISDistrict 11 Class 2ADoubles' TournamentThree TIMES NEWS doubles' team dropped opening round matches to fall out of competition in the District 11 Class 2A Doubles' Tournament at West End Racquet and Fitness Club in Allentown.Jim Thorpe's tandem of Ellyn Tomko and Anna Domingo ended up drawing the tournament's No. 2 seeds, Moravian Academy's Monica Gupta and Catherine Rau. Tomko and Domingo gave the Lions' pair a challenge, but Gupta and Rau went on to post a 6-2, 6-2 victory.Tamaqua seniors Jordan Nowacki and Vanessa Wagner fell to Blue Mountain's Violetta Boyer and Marcy Schu, 6-2, 6-1, eliminating them from the single elimination tournament.Saucon Valley's Emily Folenta and Debbie Martin got the best of Jim Thorpe's Kasey Herman and Gabby Kline. The Panthers' duo recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win.BOYS SOCCERStroudsburg-Pleasant ValleyMalik Krcic's goal and two assists highlighted Pleasant Valley's 4-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over visiting Stroudsburg.The Bears' James Patterson, Tyler Michlik and Ricky Forte also added goals, while Jordan Walters was credited with the assist on Krcic's goal.AJ Werkheiser and Andrew Castaldi combined for the shtutout in the PV net.Pleasant Valley improved to 17-1 on the season and remained unblemished in the MVC at 12-0.GIRLS SOCCERNativity-Jim ThorpeJim Thorpe had its offense in high gear as it rolled to a 6-4 Schuylkill League win over Nativity.Freshman Cat Condly had a hat trick for the Olympians and also added an assist. Caitlin Liscinski added a pair of goals and an assist and Kristin Lawrence had a goal and an assist.The Olympaisn had a 19-13 advantage in shots.FIELD HOCKEYStroudsburg-Pleasant ValleyEnya Cunningham's second half goal was enough to lift Stroudsburg to a 1-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pleasant Valley.The Bears and Mounties were knotted at six shots apiece. Hannah Bard grabbed six saves in front of PV's net, while the Mounties' Kim Henry ended up with five.Pleasant Valley slips to 8-9 overall and 7-5 in the MVC.GIRLS VOLLEYBALLJim Thorpe-TamaquaTamaqua cruised to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.Paige Baddick led the Blue Raiders' attack with 16 assists, nine service points and four aces, while Sarah Paluck chipped in with 11 service points and four kills. Kelsey Burkett (four kills) and Stacey Wallace (four service points, three kills, two aces) also contributed to the win.Mahanoy Area-MarianMarian routed Mahanoy Area, 25-7, 25-7, 25-14 in Schuylkill League action.Rachel Krajcirik led the Fillies' attack with 29 assists, 17 service points, nine digs and eight aces. Taylor Mele added 18 service points, eight digs, six kills and two aces. The Fillies' Marykate Sherkness led the way at the net with 15 kills. Tori Vadyak chipped six kills.Marian remains unbeaten at 12-0 in league play.
