The Carbon Career and Technical Institute Adult Education Center and day care program have been temporarily closed since Oct. 4 due to water damage from drenching rain storms that pounded the region on Sept. 30.
The adult education program is being temporarily housed at the health annex (the former Norby's), but parents of children in the day care program have had to find alternate care. Temporarily relocating the day care would have meant waiting for the state to come in to inspect any new quarters, and school officials determined the problem would be resolved before that could be arranged. The building should be open again by Monday, but by Wednesday at the latest, said Anthony Pondish, Director of Adult Education. The damage happened after mud fell in around a drain pipe, blocking it, he said. Workers had that problem fixed within a few hours, but the water had damaged carpets and tile. The flooring was shampooed and sanitized. But the following Monday, the floor had begun to smell."We're thinking the water went underneath the carpet and loosened the adhesive," he said. Pondish decided to close the building until carpets and tiles had been replaced and air quality test results were back."It was the safest way to go," he said.
