Men and equipment from the Jim Thorpe and Penn Forest No. 1 Fire Departments visited the LB Morris Elementary School and St. Joseph Regional Academy in Jim Thorpe as part of National Fire Prevention Week.

The theme this year for Fire Prevention Week is "Beep, Beep, Beep Smoke Detectors, A Sound You Can Live With" but their visit with the students went far beyond just smoke detectors.The firefighters went over everything from smoke alarms to escape plans to "stop drop and roll".In addition to showing and explaining fire fighting equipment with the students, they also showed the some very informative fire safety films.One of the films that some of the students watched was called "The Great Escape Challenge" in which two families competed in a kid's game show format to test their fire safety knowledge.The films highlighted some of the most important rules in fire safety which are to make sure that homes HAVE working smoke detectors and that they ALWAYS have fresh batteries in them as they are useless without them.For the Kindergarten students, Sparky the Fire Dog stopped by to visit them.National Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 3 to 9, is being promoted by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).
