Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Sept. 28 at Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville, with 41 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation.Reports were presented by treasurer Shirley Becker and President Schmerfeld, who provided the secretary's report. Birthday wishes were extended to Betty Brobst. A thank you card was received from Jean Machamer.Shirley Becker provided inspirational readings. The annual Christmas party will be held Dec. 14, catered by Christy Joy.The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. Anyone 50 or older is welcome to join.Band festivalThe Tamaqua Area "Raider" Band and Band Boosters will host the 14th Annual Land of the Running Water Band Festival on Oct. 9 in the Tamaqua Sports Stadium, and will feature 13 visiting bands to be judged by a panel of current and former music educators. Trophies will be awarded.Marching bands scheduled to perform are: the Minersville Battlin' Miners; Panther Valley Panthers; Mahanoy Area Golden Bears; Nativity

B.V.M.; Shenandoah Valley devil Pride; Hamburg Area Hawks; Wilson Area; Tri Valley Bulldogs; Williams Valley Viking Pride; Pottsville Area; Exeter Township; Bangor Slaters; and Southern Lehigh. The host band will also perform.Competition will begin at 6:30 p.m., rain or shine.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Rodney Wells will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. A special Pa. Dutch service focusing on heritage will be held. Children will receive the Joyous Noise Offering from the missionaries in Thailand.Sunday School will be held at 10:15 a.m., with practice for the Christmas Program Youth Trip to Lake Harmony. Daisies and Brownies will meet at 6 p.m.Activities for next week include: Monday, Food Co-op at 9 a.m.; Wednesday, dinner theater rehearsal at 6:15 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 4:45 p.m., worship and music committee at 5:45, the Confirmation class meets at 6:30 p. m. and Brownies at 6:30.Choir rehearsals are held on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: Junior Choir at 7 p.m., and Senior Choir at 7:45 p.m.St. John UCCThe Rev. Kevin Duffy Guy will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. service this Sunday in St. John United Church of Christ. Nursery care is available during the service, which will be followed by a time of fellowship. The weekly service is broadcast on radio station WLSH, AM1410, at 11:30 a.m. Sundays.Activities for next week include: Monday, consistory meeting, 7 p.m.; Tuesday, bell choir rehearsal, 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, choir rehearsal at 7:30 p.m.Calvary UMThe Rev. Brian Reading will officiate at this Sunday's 10:25 a.m. worship service in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church, Lewistown Valley. He will develop a morning message entitled "Peace through Believing without Seeing."
