Mahanoy district has former churches put back on tax rolls

Mahanoy Area School District won approval from the Schuylkill County Assessment Appeals Board to restore several former religious buildings back on the tax rolls for 2011 in action taken at hearings being held at the courthouse in Pottsville.

Barnesville Circuit building, 66 Grier Avenue, Barnesville, owned by the Evangelical Church, had the market value of $44,220 and assessment of $22,110 restored on the building because it is reported no longer to be a place of worship.Jewish Synagogue, 300 W, Mahanoy Ave., Mahanoy City, had the market value of $26,880 and assessment of $13,440 restored on the building as no religious services are being held and stained glass windows have been removed.Saint Casimir's Church building at 113 S. Catawissa St., Mahanoy City, the market value was restored at $780 and assessment at $390 as it no longer is used for religious services.German Catholic Church building, E. Mahanoy St., Mahanoy City, had its market value of $137,930 and assessment of $68,965 restored because no religious services are held there.Saint Casimir Roman Catholic Church, on S. Catawissa St., Mahanoy City, which is reported closed, market value of $168,160 and assessment of $84,080 was restored.Saint Canicus Parochial School Building on S. Catawissa St., Mahanoy City, the market value of $214,480 and assessment of $107,240 were restored as it was reported a day care center is operated by the church and it receives income.A building on Catawissa Street, Mahanoy City, owned by the Allentown Diocese, the market value of $64,030 and assessment of $32,030 were restored as it was reported the building is no longer used for religious worship.Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church building at the corner of 14th and Pine sts., Mahanoy City, the market value of $54,530 and assessment of $27,265 were restored as it no longer is used as a church and the stained glass windows have been removed.The school district also won appeals on two private properties.Mark and Kimberly Valentine, 26 John St., Tamaqua, owners of a property on east side of Meadows View, Barnesville, had the market value increased from $17,680 to $20,800 and assessment of $8,840 to $10,400, an increase of $1,560 in assessment.George D. Mammarella, 22 Circle Drive, Barnesville, owners of a property at 300 E. Pine St., Mahanoy City, market value increased from $22,400 to $45,760 and assessment from $11,220 to $22,880, an increase of $11,660 in assessment.
