Miller Bloodmobile

Miller-Keystone Blood Center will conduct a bloodmobile at the First United Church of Christ's Fellowship Hall (next to Palmerton Borough Hall) on Thursday, Oct. 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This visit is sponsored by the Palmerton Concourse Club. Off-street parking will be available at Penn Northeast (both sides of the building), and at the former Golden Key parking lot, by permission of the owners.Donors are needed more than ever this time, since they no longer have students to supplement the numbers. Those eligible are encouraged to donate blood components (platelets, plasma, and/or red cells) on the Trima machines, which gives donors credit for two or three units, and takes an hour to an hour-and-a-half.To be eligible, donors must be at least 17 years of age, 110 pounds, and no tattoos or body piercings within the last 12 months. Previous cancer patients who have been cancer-free for one year may now be eligible to donate. For specific medical information, call Miller, toll-free, at 1-800-223-6667 during office hours. First-time donors should bring photo ID, such as driver's license. Previous donors should bring their Miller ID cards. There are no age or experience requirements for those positions. New members are always welcome regardless of skill level.Newspaper driveThe men and boys of St. John's Lutheran Church will hold their monthly newspaper drive on Saturday, Oct. 2. There will be one sweep of the Palmerton, Aquashicola, and Little Gap areas beginning at 8 a.m.Papers should be bundled and placed with in sight of the collectors. They are collecting papers only, no magazines. The shiny inserts are acceptable. They also need grocery-size, brown paper bags.Persons missed, or those wishing to dispose of papers throughout the month, may take them to the garage across from the church, which is always open. In case of bad weather, the drive will be held the following Saturday.Quilters need fabricThe quilting group at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton, is looking for donations of fabric to use for knotted quilts. The group works nine months of the year cutting squares, sewing and knotting the finished quilts, which are sent to Africa through Lutheran World Relief.Last year, the group finished over 50 quilts, which are being delivered next month. The group also needs donations of old bed sheets, which are used for the backing of the quilts.If you have fabric or sheets to donate, you may drop them off at the church, or call the office at (610) 826-2524. If you are interested in helping to assemble the quilts, you are welcome to join the group, which meets at Holy Trinity Luthern Church on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon.Teen Advisory GroupThe Teen Advisory Group will meet at the Palmerton Area Library on Wednesday, Oct. 6, after school. The group is for students in grades 7-12, and new members are welcome.Call the library at (610) 826-3424 for more information. The group is currently remodeling and painting a section of the library basement.Trick or TreatTrick or Treat night will be held in the Palmerton Borough from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27. Residents are reminded to leave their porch lights on if they wish to participate in this event.
