Judges accept guilty pleas from 13 offenders

Carbon County Court Judges on Thursday accepted guilty pleas from 13 offenders.

Senior Judge Richard W. Webb accepted pleas from:Peter R. Abbruzzi, 45, of Lehighton, pleaded to fraud by altering or forging title, registration or inspection. The charges were filed by Lehighton police and stemmed from an incident on June 28 on the Keystone parking lot.Abbruzzi was placed on ARD for one year. He must pay the $350 cost of the program and court costs, and perform 15 hours of community service.Russell E. Austin, 31, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded guilty to a first offense of driving under the influence. The charge was filed by Lehighton police on May 29 after Austin was stopped on the Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Blvd. His blood alcohol level was 0.12 percent. The threshold for drunken driving is 0.08 percent.He was accepted into the Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition program for one year. He must also pay the $400 cost of the program, plus court costs, lose his license for 30 days and compete an alcohol highway safety program. •James L. Dennis, 25, of Lehighton, pleaded guilty to escape. He was charged by the county Sheriff's Department after fleeing while being served with a warrant on June 17.He was sentenced to one year of probation and court costs. Edwin Mertz, 51, of Lehighton. He was charged with theft by unlawful taking by Lehighton police on Aug. 30. He and another man took a bench belonging to Barrett Ravenhurst from a Lehighton street corner.He was sentenced to six months probation and court costs.Thomas Paul Rehl, Jr., 43, of Lehighton, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, failing to have his headlights on and failing to obey a stop sign. He was charged by Franklin Township police on Feb. 27. His blood alcohol content was 0.231 percent. Webb sentenced Rehl to six months of probation, a $300 fine, plus $25 for the headlights, careless driving and stop sign violations.Calvin William Shook, Jr., 45, of Weissport, pleaded guilty to making false reports. He was charged on July 20 by state police at Lehighton. He told then that several guns he had in his possession (he was not supposed to have them because he was on state parole at the time) had been stolen, when they had not.He was sentenced to 66 days to 18 months in jail and given credit for the 66 days he has served.Dora Jane Stoeckel, 35, of Palmerton, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and corruption of minors. She was charged by state police at Lehighton on March 15. The charges stemmed from Stoeckel egging on her teenage daughter and another girl in a fight that ended up circulating on the Internet video site, YouTube. The incident occurred on Gap Road in Lower Towamensing Township.Stoeckel will serve one year of probation, receive mental health counseling, pay court costs and perform three hours of community service for each month of her probation. Children and Youth Services is involved with the family, Stoeckel told Webb. George Stofko Jr., 43, of Northampton, pleaded guilty to resisting arrest. He was charged by Palmerton police on July 4 in connection with a violation of a protection-from-abuse order.He was sentenced to six months of probation, have a drug and alcohol evaluation and pay court costs. He asked Webb to include mental health counseling to help him cope with his stress levels. Webb agreed. Charles Anthony Sweetra, 46, of Kingston, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and driving without a license. He was charged by state police at Lehighton on March 6. His blood alcohol content was 0.10 percent.He was sentenced to six months of probation, a $300 fine and court costs for the DUI charge. He must also pay $200 in fines and also court costs for driving without a license. •Tara E. Wentz, 27, of Lehighton, pleaded guilty to theft by unlawful taking. She was charged by Franklin Township police on May 28 in connection with the theft of $365 in cash from Square One Market on Interchange Road while she was working as a clerk at the store. She told Webb she stole to feed a heroin addiction, but is now in recovery.She must pay $365 in restitution, pay court costs and serve one year of probation. President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II accepted guilty pleas from:Melissa L. Atkinson, 21, of Jim Thorpe. She was charged with criminal attempt to obtain controlled substance. She was ordered to pay court costs and serve one year of probation after she is freed from prison on another charge. She is also barred from entering the property of the Mauch Chunk Pharmacy.On a charge of receiving stolen property, Atkinson was sentenced to pay court costs and serve two months to 12 moths, minus one day in jail. Nanovic credited her with one day os jail time. She also must make $1,625 in restitution. She must not take any nonprescribed drugs and pay a $50 monthly probation fee. Michele Christman, 44, of Lehighton, who pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle without valid inspection and driving under the influence. She was charged by Lehighton police on April 28 on Bankway street in that borough. Her blood alcohol content was reported at 0.22 percent.She must serve six months probation and pay court costs, a $25 fine and a $50 monthly probation fee and get a drug and alcohol evaluation.Amandio Dias, 45, of Jim Thorpe, who was charged with making terroristic threats by state police at Fern Ridge on May 29. He was sentenced to six to 18 months in jail, followed by two years' probation. He was also made to pay court costs, forfeit any weapons to the authorities and undergo mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations.
