Emergency personnel blessed at 9/11 service

A Community Unity Service in celebration of praise and thanksgiving to honor the police, fire, and ambulance services of Nesquehoning and the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, the 9/11 victims, families, and heroes was held on Saturday, nine years after the horrific incident took place on American soil.

The service took place at the Meed's Memorial United Methodist Church and was hosted by the Rev. Ron Kuntz, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Taking part in the processional were Councilwomen Mary Fox and Rose Walck and police Officers Tim Wuttke and Tom Kurtz.Taking part in the worship were the following Nesquehoning clergy: the Rev. Robert Teklinski, the Rev. Michael Netznik, the Rev. Anthony Drouncheck, the Rev. John Hazel, and the Rev. Kuntz; with Nesquehoning Mayor K. Tony Walck giving the proclamation.The church choir sang numerous patriotic songs accompanied on the organ by David Westrip. The bagpiper was Mike Williams who led the procession. A song entitled "Proud to Be An American" was sung by Rose McFadden.Mayor Walck made a point to thank the Kovatch Organization for its cooperation in releasing its employees to answer calls of fires and ambulance pick ups. They get paid for the time they are away from their jobs for that purpose.An impressive part of the service was the anointing of the emergency personnel followed with a prayer. Each clergyman took part. John McArdle, Nesquehoning Fire Company fire chief, remembered the late Patrolman Steve Bretzik.The recessional music was provided by Williams on bagpipes and Westrip on keyboard.Following the blessing of the vehicles, refreshments were served in the church basement.
