Bids are opened to collect old computers, electronics

Bids were opened by the Schuylkill County Commissioners at Wednesday's work session held at the courthouse in Pottsville pertaining to colleciton of computer and electronic material during the annual fall cleanup to be held later this month.

There were four companies who bid as follows:Eco International Vestal, New York, bid a flat rate of $330 per pickup from the 10 transit stations in the county, plus a 14 cent charge for recycling computers. Garvin Services, of Williamstown, also submitted a flat rate for pickups from each transit station, $80 plus $125 per ton for recycling all tires.HSR, Hazleton, submitted individual bids for each transit station. For pickups from Wayne Township site, CES Landfill Inc., North Manheim Township site, Ringtown, Pine Grove Landfill and Porter Township, $250 each; Minersville and Girardville Boroughs, $225 each and City of Pottsville and Tamaqua Transfer Station, $200 each plus $90 cost per ton for recycling all tires.Mahantongo Enterprises Inc., Liverpool, PA, bid $560 for pickup from Tamaqua Transfer Station; $525 from CES Landfill Inc. $500 from Wayne Township site; $490 from City of Pottsville; $465 each from North Manheim Township and Minersville Borough; $455 from Pine Grove Landfill Inc.; $420 from Girardville; $375 from Porter Township and $250 from Ringtown and $80 per ton for recycling all tires. Contracts will be awarded at a future public meeting.On behalf of the Office of Solid Waste and Resource Management the commissioners were briefed by County Engineer Lisa Mahall on her recommendation of successful bids for other services for the cleanup, Weiner Iron and Meal Corporation, Pottsville, scrap metal transportation services and recycling accepting recycling from seven sites; Mostick Brothers Disposal, Atlas, transporation of bulky items from four sites and Potts and Monger Sanitation, Pine Grove, for transportation of bulky items from three sites. Warden Eugene Berdanier was granted permission to solicit bids for staff uniforms and a new walk in freezer and cooler for the county prison. Action on their request will be taken at next week's public meeting.At the request of County Treasurer Jacqueline McGovern the KNBT Bank was designated as a depositor of funds. At the recommendation of County Solicitor Robert Frycklund approval was given to authorize the execution of a stipulation in a settlementy of an assessment appeal pertaining to a one-story commercial retail property in Mahanouy City Borough which is currently used as a convenience store. The agreement is to decrease the market value of the property on the county tax rolls from $1,474,740 to $850,000 retroactive to January 1.Commissioner Mantura Gallagher announced the courthouse will be closed Monday to observe Labor Day. A breakdown in the air conditioning system Hoffman Room where the commissioners hold their work sessions caused the men to shed their suit coats and windows were opened and the noise from the boulevard was loud and disturbing but business went on in 90 degree heat.
