The aim to consolidate earned income tax collectors throughout the commonwealth hit a road block in Schuylkill County as the county's Tax Collecton Committee was unable to reach a decision on a collector at a meeting held Tuesday evening at the courthouse in Pottsville. A law passed in 2008, called Act 32, aims for the consolidation in the state from 560 income tax collectors to 69 by January.
Three bids were received but all were rejected and new bids were asked to be submitted because the committee was not satisfied with the overall cost of the service offered by the bidders. The deadline for new bids was set for Sept. 7 and they will be reviewed by the committee at the Sept. 13 meeting. The committee claimed a number of county townships and boroughs have failed to pay into the budget of the tax collection committee as required under Act 32 and could face legal action. They were listed as Ryan, West Penn and Union Townships and boroughs of Girardville, Shenandoah and Tamaqua.
