Ss. Peter and Paul School encourages students' friendships before first day of school

When Ss. Peter and Paul School reopens next week, the 115 students will already know each other.

The school held its annual parent night Monday at Phifer Ice Dam Park to give all the students the opportunity to meet other students and get to know them."We have small classes and our students excel," said Sherry Ambrose, principal. "We hold this event so that when our students come to school on the first day, they already have a friend. It makes for a better day for them to know that they know someone."Ambrose was thrilled with the way the kindergarten students became friends over ice cream sundaes."We're still enrolling kindergarten students," she said. "We always have a few parents who don't register their child for kindergarten until the last minute."She noted that at Ss. Peter and Paul School, there are 14 teachers to instruct the students in all curriculum areas. "We have the newest curriculum and we believe we are ahead by one year on the latest curriculum over state requirements because the Diocese of Allentown is very proactive with providing the latest curriculum."Some of our teachers serve on the curriculum committee so they are constantly being updated," she said.While Ambrose and the parents of students met and shared stories, the youngsters got acquainted and played on the playground.For Zoryana Duda, Antigone Gonzalez, Megan Aaron and Mary Wilhem, it was a day to play."We have a nice mix of students and everyone was happy to see each other before school started," she said. "I like that each child who comes to school has a friend on the first day of school."Ss. Peter and Paul School will reopen at 7:35 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Lunch will be available or students may bring a packed lunch. An opening mass will be held in the church at 1 p.m. All families are invited to attend.Dress Code for the first day of school is the seasonal uniform option. Extended Care will be available beginning the first day of school. Morning care begins at 6:45 a.m. and afternoon care extends until 5 p.m.Preschool classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Early Childhood classes begin on Thursday, Sept. 9.Registrations are being accepted for grades K-8. For additional information, call the school office at (610) 377-4466.
